2010 Board of Directors Nominees
We are proud to announce the slate of candidates for the 2010 BOMA-Atlanta Board of Directors: Patti Brown with SERVPRO; Diane Dameron with Barry Real Estate Companies; Heather Davis with PM Realty Group; Brian Manus, SMA, with Winthrop Management; Marcy Moneypenny, RPA, with CB Richard Ellis; and Jason Withers, RPA, FMA, LEED AP, with General Services Administration. They join returning board members Gerri Brown, RPA, with Pope and Land Enterprises; James Buck with Malone Construction; Scott Doksansky, CPM; Mark Dukes, RPA, with Duke Realty Corporation; and Ian Hughes with Jones Lang LaSalle Americas. Judi Sponsel, RPA, with Behringer Harvard is nominated to serve as treasurer. She will join the other 2010 officers: President Dave Hofstetter, RPA, with Highwoods; President-elect Michelle Dixon, RPA, with Parmenter Realty Partners; Vice President Linda Beauchamp, RPA, with Cousins Properties Incorporated; and Past President Grace Bickham, RPA, with Carter. The 2010 nominees will be voted on at the Nov. 11 BOMA luncheon.
New ASIS Security Conference
In an effort to provide greater value to the security, law enforcement and business communities, ASIS International proudly announces that it will host a regional security conference on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at Gwinnett Center. This program will address a wide range of security topics including, business watch crime prevention programs, cyber crime, information security and other current and emerging security challenges and issues. Fight the sustainable building ordinance!
For the past year, BOMA-Atlanta members have been very involved fighting the City of Atlanta's proposed sustainable building ordinance (ASBO), which Sustainable Atlanta and Southface developed on behalf of the Atlanta mayor. The ordinance requires all new buildings to conform with minimum LEED standards.This mandatory ordinance would increase costs for construction within the city. BOMA is opposed to the current ordinance, since it is mandatory and does not include meaningful incentives. BOMA favors a voluntary, incentive-based solution. E-mail your city council representative about the ordinance and express your opposition. BOMA-Atlanta has frozen membership dues for 2010 at the current 2009 level. Freezing membership dues is one step in a series of efforts BOMA-Atlanta is making to serve members during this difficult economic environment. The association has also offered a variety of free and low-cost educational programs for members and also continues to provide value to building owners through government advocacy.
Guidance for Businesses and Employers to Plan and Respond to the 2009 - 2010 Influenza Season
The CDC has developed updated guidance for employers of all sizes to use as they develop or review and update plans to respond to 2009 H1N1 influenza now and during the upcoming fall and winter influenza season. Businesses and employers, in general, play a key role in protecting employees' health and safety, as well as in limiting the negative impact of influenza outbreaks on the individual, the community, and the nation's economy. Community Service Opportunities
BOMA has a variety of ways for you to give back to the community. Volunteers are needed to help with Hillside's Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser this year. Thirty to forty volunteers are needed on the afternoon of October 12 to unload the delivery truck. Volunteers are also needed throughout the day on October 13-31 to help sell pumpkins. To volunteer, contact Gabriella Rowland at Hillside at 404-875-4551. BOMA is also coordinating a holiday party and angel tree program for Hillside. To become involved in this activity, contact Nancy Wesley, Cousins Properties Incorporated, 404-407-2364, nancywesley@cousinsproperties.com. Also, BOMA encourages property managers to consider donating a portion of the proceeds from lobby events to support Hillside. BOMI Introduces New Computer Based Testing
Starting January 1, 2010, BOMI is moving to computer-based testing for all courses. With this change, there will be a $60 additional BOMI fee for each test taken on computer under the new BOMI testing system. (October 21) Aerial work platform (AWP) training will cover an understanding of the responsibilities of AWP operation, how to conduct a prestart inspection, how to conduct a workplace inspection, knowledge of hazards involved in AWP operation, various types of AWPs available, how to prevent workplace accidents & hands-on training.
Electrical Systems and Illumination
(October 21) To be able to safely operate and maintain a building's electrical equipment, you must thoroughly understand the components of electrical systems and how to measure the electricity your building consumes. This course provides you with a clear understanding of electricity basics, the skills needed to measure electrical consumption, and the ability to recognize, set up, and maintain reliable and effective maintenance and safety systems.
