BOMA-Atlanta Freezes Membership Dues

BOMA-Atlanta has frozen membership dues for 2010 at the current 2009 level. Freezing membership dues is one step in a series of efforts BOMA-Atlanta is making to serve members during this difficult economic environment. The association has also offered a variety of free and low-cost educational programs for members and also continues to provide value to building owners through government advocacy.
 

Guidance for Businesses and Employers to Plan and Respond to the 2009 - 2010 Influenza Season

The CDC has developed updated guidance for employers of all sizes to use as they develop or review and update plans to respond to 2009 H1N1 influenza now and during the upcoming fall and winter influenza season. Businesses and employers, in general, play a key role in protecting employees' health and safety, as well as in limiting the negative impact of influenza outbreaks on the individual, the community, and the nation's economy. Community Service Opportunities

BOMA has a variety of ways for you to give back to the community. Volunteers are needed to help with Hillside's Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser this year. Thirty to forty volunteers are needed on the afternoon of October 12 to unload the delivery truck. Volunteers are also needed throughout the day on October 13-31 to help sell pumpkins. To volunteer, contact Gabriella Rowland at Hillside at 404-875-4551. BOMA is also coordinating a holiday party and angel tree program for Hillside. To become involved in this activity, contact Nancy Wesley, Cousins Properties Incorporated, 404-407-2364, nancywesley@cousinsproperties.com. Also, BOMA encourages property managers to consider donating a portion of the proceeds from lobby events to support Hillside. BOMA Leadership Nominations

It is time to consider BOMA leadership positions for 2010. Positions are available to serve on the BOMA-Atlanta Board of Directors and as a BOMA-Atlanta officer. Serving as an elected leader in BOMA-Atlanta is an exciting opportunity to help set the direction for the association for years to come. The Board of Directors meets quarterly and also conducts an annual strategic planning retreat. If you are interested in serving BOMA-Atlanta in a leadership capacity or know anyone who is a good candidate to serve, please forward the individual's name, company, and phone number to Gabriel Eckert at geckert@boma-atlanta.org, or call 404-475-9980. Nominations are due by September 25.

Pandemic Preparation

Property managers and building engineers are both encouraged to attend a lunch program on pandemic preparation. The Sept. 3 and 10 BTO Luncheons will feature Pam Blackwell from the Cobb County Health Department speaking on pandemic preparedness. With threat of a wider H1N1 Flu outbreak during the fall and winter months, preparation is key. This program will provide you with vital information to protect you and the individuals in your building. Click here to register.

BOMI Introduces New Computer Based Testing

Starting January 1, 2010, BOMI is moving to computer-based testing for all courses. With this change, there will be a $60 additional BOMI fee for each test taken on computer under the new BOMI testing system. New Green Associate/LEED AP Training

The U.S. Green Building Council's new LEED Green Associate designation is the first step to achieving LEED AP status. During the one-day class, Charlie Cichetti of Sustainable Options will provide an in-depth overview of  recent changes to the Green Associate program and LEED AP exam and prepare you to take the Green Associate exam.  In addition to this training, attendees will receive online access to exam simulators for 60 days to reinforce classroom knowledge. The course fee includes all training materials, access to the online simulators, lunch and refreshments.To register for this course, click here. New EER Available

Commercial HVAC (Fourth Semester)

(October 1) Designed for building engineers, the Commercial HVAC course provides an opportunity to enhance service skills through hands-on training. The course will enable beginning engineers and those with experience to become more proficient in the work environment. Course topics will include commercial refrigeration systems, energy management, DDC controls, pneumatic calibration, cooling tower maintenance, air handlers, pumps, boilers, water and air balancing and other topics.

Facilities Planning and Project Management

(October 7) Through this course, you will develop the skills and knowledge critical to the successful execution of a facilities project: proper planning, selecting a building's team, and following through with attention to detail. (October 21) Aerial work platform (AWP) training will cover an understanding of the responsibilities of AWP operation, how to conduct a prestart inspection, how to conduct a workplace inspection, knowledge of hazards involved in AWP operation, various types of AWPs available, how to prevent workplace accidents & hands-on training.

Electrical Systems and Illumination

(October 21) To be able to safely operate and maintain a building's electrical equipment, you must thoroughly understand the components of electrical systems and how to measure the electricity your building consumes. This course provides you with a clear understanding of electricity basics, the skills needed to measure electrical consumption, and the ability to recognize, set up, and maintain reliable and effective maintenance and safety systems.

Young Professional Education Series:  After Hours

(October 28) This seminar explores human resources management issues of planning, organizing and directing; knowing where you want to go, how you're going to get there, and keeping the department on track and expenses within budget.
