BOMA-Atlanta Freezes Membership Dues
BOMA-Atlanta has frozen membership dues for 2010 at the current 2009 level. Freezing membership dues is one step in a series of efforts BOMA-Atlanta is making to serve members during this difficult economic environment. The association has also offered a variety of free and low-cost educational programs for members and also continues to provide value to building owners through government advocacy.
Community Service Opportunities
BOMA has a variety of ways for you to give back to the community. Volunteers are needed to help with Hillside's Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser this year. Thirty to forty volunteers are needed on the afternoon of October 12 to unload the delivery truck. Volunteers are also needed throughout the day on October 13-31 to help sell pumpkins. To volunteer, contact Gabriella Rowland at Hillside at 404-875-4551. BOMA is also coordinating a holiday party and angel tree program for Hillside. To become involved in this activity, contact Nancy Wesley, Cousins Properties Incorporated, 404-407-2364, nancywesley@cousinsproperties.com. Also, BOMA encourages property managers to consider donating a portion of the proceeds from lobby events to support Hillside. For more information on how to do so, contact Annette Gorelick, with Ruppert Nurseries, at 770-931-9900.
BOMA Leadership Nominations
It is time to consider BOMA leadership positions for 2010. Positions are available to serve on the BOMA-Atlanta Board of Directors and as a BOMA-Atlanta officer. Serving as an elected leader in BOMA-Atlanta is an exciting opportunity to help set the direction for the association for years to come. The Board of Directors meets quarterly and also conducts an annual strategic planning retreat. If you are interested in serving BOMA-Atlanta in a leadership capacity or know anyone who is a good candidate to serve, please forward the individual's name, company, and phone number to Gabriel Eckert at geckert@boma-atlanta.org, or call 404-475-9980. Sandy Springs Building Round Table
Sandy Springs building codes interpretations have caused higher design fees, elevated construction costs, permitting delays, tenant occupancy postponements, financial penalties and loss of revenue. Are you a Sandy Springs building owner or manager who is struggling with the City's interpretations of occupant load calculations and elevator lobbies? Join other affected real estate managers and brokers at the Sept. 2nd Sandy Springs Building Round Table to discuss these issues with Sandy Springs city officials. Organized by Mark Schroeder with Veneendaal Cave, BOMA-Atlanta and the Atlanta Commercial Board of REALTORS, the round table event will held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the REALTORS association's East Classrooms at 5784 Lake Forrest Drive, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. To attend the event, RSVP to REALTORS Director of Government Affairs Robert Broome at robert@abr.org.
Fight the sustainable building ordinance!
For the past year, BOMA-Atlanta members have been very involved fighting the City of Atlanta's proposed sustainable building ordinance (ASBO), which Sustainable Atlanta (SA) and Southface developed on behalf of the Atlanta mayor. The ordinance requires all new buildings to conform with minimum LEED standards. The Atlanta City Council's Community Development subcommittee is planning on taking the ordinance to the full Council for a vote. BOMA's position has been to oppose government mandates and support an incentive-based, voluntary program. Attend the subcommittee meeting on Sept. 1 at 9 a.m. in Committee Room 2 at 55 Trinity Ave. in Atlanta and sign in to speak out against the ordinance. You can also e-mail your Council representative about the ordinance. To determine your Council representative, find your company district here then find your Council member by district number. To read the current draft of the ordinance, click here. To read more about Sustainable Atlanta and the ordinance, click here.
