Fight the sustainable building ordinance!
For the past year, BOMA-Atlanta members have been very involved fighting the City of Atlanta's proposed sustainable building ordinance (ASBO), which Sustainable Atlanta (SA) and Southface developed on behalf of the Atlanta mayor. The ordinance requires all new buildings to conform with minimum LEED standards. The Atlanta City Council's Community Development subcommittee is planning on taking the ordinance to the full Council for a vote. Attend the subcommittee meeting on Sept. 1 at 9 a.m. in Committee Room 2 at 55 Trinity Ave. in Atlanta and sign in to speak out against the ordinance. You can also e-mail your Council representative about the ordinance. To determine your Council representative, find your company district here then find your Council member by district number. To read the current draft of the ordinance, click here. To read more about Sustainable Atlanta and the ordinance, click here.
Elevator Door Restrictors Update
BOMA-Atlanta members work with the Georgia Department of Labor's (GDOL) Safety and Engineering Elevator Advisory Board to ensure that your interests are represented at the state level. One important elevator issue at present is elevator door restrictors, which have been included in state code since the 1980s. It is now mandatory for all elevators to have them by Dec. 31. The GDOL's Safety Engineering division administers some of the laws relating to work conditions and employee safety. To view the sections of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated (O.C.G.A.) that are administered by the GDOL's Safety Engineering division, click here.
