BOMA International Provides Swine Influenza Resources
BOMA International is closely monitoring the recent outbreak of Swine Influenza (flu) in Mexico, as well as the other cases that have been identified in North America. According to the World Health Organization, 40 cases have been confirmed in the United States with infections in New York, California, Texas, Kansas and Ohio. BOMA International has updated their Pandemic Flu Resources page with the latest information, including links to organizations, such as the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. New LEED Program Launched
On April 27, the U.S. Green Buildings Council launched its new LEED 2009 program, including LEED Online. LEED projects may be registered under the new or the old LEED rating system until June 27, 2009. Under the new program, LEED project registration and certification will transition to the Green Building Certification Institute, which administers the LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) program, and some LEED AP exams will be discontinued. Please note the following important exam dates.
- May 2009: new LEED Green Associate and LEED AP Operations and Maintenance exams are launched
- June 2009: new LEED AP Homes exam is launched
- June 30, 2009: LEED AP New Construction and LEED AP Commercial Interiors exams are retired (last day to take these exams)
- Fall 2009: new LEED AP Building Design and Construction and LEED AP Interior Design and Construction exams are launched.
BOMA-Atlanta has partnered with the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce to produce a new sustainability summit, "Promoting the Business Case for Green Buildings Through Energy Efficiency." The summit will be held at the Gwinnett Environmental Heritage Center on May 13. In this economic downturn, cutting cost can be crucial, now more than ever. Come learn how sustainability through energy efficiency can make economic sense and improve your bottom line. You'll be one of the first to hear about the Atlanta Regional Commission's new Certified Green Communities initiative and how Gwinnett County is taking the lead on becoming more sustainable. Metro-Atlanta business leaders will also present how they implemented energy efficient policies and experienced a return on their investment. Finally, we'll teach you how your company can use financing tools to accomplish this goal. The summit has been approved for four (4) CEUs by the Georgia Real Estate Commission. Congratulations regional TOBY winners!
Platinum Tower, owned by SP4 Platinum Tower LP and managed by Joyce Tuttle, RPA of CB Richard Ellis, won the BOMA Southern Region 250,000-499,999 square feet TOBY Award.
1180 Peachtree, owned by GE Asset Management and managed by Larry Channell, CPM, CCIM of Hines Interests LP, won the BOMA Southern Region Earth Award.
Northpark Town Center, owned by Bank of Ireland and managed by Stacy Abbate, RPA of CB Richard Ellis, won the BOMA Southern Region over 1 million square feet TOBY Award.
Sally Elliot, RPA, CPM of PM Realty Group, the Huey Award winner, was also named Southern Region Member of the Year.
At the BOMA Southern Region Conference, Shane Froman, RPA of Angus Systems Group was elected to serve on the Southern Region Board of Directors. Linda Beauchamp, RPA of Cousins Properties Inc. will serve as the 2010 past president for the BOMA Southern Region. Keith Martin, RPA, FMA of Pope and Land Enterprises and Rick Amon, CPM of Daniel Corp. will serve the second year of their two-year term on the BOMA Southern Region Board of Directors.
Changes to Georgia's Escalator and Elevator Rules
As part of our commitment to lead the commercial real estate community, we at BOMA-Atlanta are engaged in government departments at the state and local level. At a recent Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) Safety Engineering meeting, we learned that the following changes made to Georgia Rules for Escalators and Elevators will be become effective June 1, 2009. With the adoption of these changes from 2007 comes adopted changes to the 2008 adenda. The changes include: changes to the length of time that elevator maintenance records are maintained, the mandatory use of barricades for inoperable escalators and changes to the expiration date for elevator operating permit fees. BOMA-Atlanta Endorses the 7 Point Challenge
Recently, BOMA-Atlanta endorsed BOMA International's Market Transformation Energy Plan and 7-Point Challenge to reduce energy consumption in commercial buildings by 30 percent by 2012. BOMA-Atlanta would like to encourage Georgia companies to take part in this program and join over 100 BOMA member companies and local associations in committing to make improved energy performance a priority.

Design, Operation and Maintenance II
(May 13) This course provides information property and facility managers need to make management decisions about various building systems and sites, decisions that will increase occupant safety and comfort while facilitating building efficiency to meet the business goals of an organization. The course provides an understanding of electrical systems and lighting, elevator maintenance and modernization, and pest and solid waste management. It also covers security issues, fire and safety systems, and energy management concerns.
Strategies for Reducing and Reusing Building Resources
(May 13) This Web seminar explores strategies for reducing a building's water, energy and gas use. It examines methods for engaging tenants and other building service contractors in identifying opportunities to reduce resource use in the building as well as enhancing the building's image while preserving critical natural resources. The seminar will also focus on how to adapt leases and building policies to address these sustainable goals.
Community Service Mountain Outing
