BOMA-Atlanta has partnered with the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce to produce a new sustainability summit, "Promoting the Business Case for Green Buildings Through Energy Efficiency." The summit will be held at the Gwinnett Environmental Heritage Center on May 13. In this economic downturn, cutting cost can be crucial, now more than ever. Come learn how sustainability through energy efficiency can make economic sense and improve your bottom line. You'll be one of the first to hear about the Atlanta Regional Commission's new Certified Green Communities initiative and how Gwinnett County is taking the lead on becoming more sustainable. Metro-Atlanta business leaders will also present how they implemented energy efficient policies and experienced a return on their investment. Finally, we'll teach you how your company can use financing tools to accomplish this goal. BOMA-Atlanta is also seeking approval for four (4) hours of CEU for participants who hold a Georgia Real Estate license. For more information, or to register for the summit, click here.
Georgia Legislature Adjourns
The 2009 Georgia General Assembly adjourned "sine die" on April 3 at midnight with a few critical topics unresolved, including the ever-important matter of transportation funding. The Assembly did finally approve an $18.6 million budget for fiscal year 2010, including $1.3 million in federal stimulus money to help make up for the shortfalls. If revenue numbers continue to fall like they did during the first few months of 2009, there could be the possibility that the governor will call a special session this summer or early fall to consider further cuts or revenue enhancements. Both chambers also gave final approval for HB 481, known as The J.O.B.S. Act of 2009, which will give tax breaks to businesses and hopefully create jobs. The bill will also cut long-term capital gains taxes in half. Each week during the state legislative season, BOMA-Atlanta's lobbyists at FiveashStanley created legislative updates that have been uploaded to the advocacy section of the BOMA-Atlanta Web site. To view the all the updates, click here.
