You’ll also get a bird’s eye view of the six million gallon Ocean Voyager exhibit, home to the Georgia Aquarium’s whale sharks. Read the Latest Draft of the Green Building Ordinance. The City of Atlanta is considering enacting a green building ordinance, and BOMA-Atlanta's lobbyists, Government Affairs chair and other BOMA-Atlanta advocates are working with other organizations, such as NAIOP's Ga. chapter, to ensure that the ordinance promotes fair sustainable development. To read the latest draft of the ordinance, click here. The draft is open to public comments until February 6, and a presentation of this draft will be provided on February 17 at 5 p.m. at Southface's Home Depot Training Room. To register to attend the presentation at Southface, contact Aria Finkelstein at aria@damespointe.com. To volunteer to serve as a BOMA-Atlanta advocate for this issue or for another government affairs issue, e-mail Laura Kenney at lkenney@boma-atlanta.org.
HR in Committee. The Georgia House of Representatives last week spent significant time on House Resolution 1 (HR 1), a proposal to limit the increase in the assessed value of real estate used for taxation to a specific annual percentage, and BOMA-Atlanta government affairs representatives spent significant time at the Capitol speaking with legislators and raising concerns about tax inequities. HR 1 was amended as it worked through the committee process to include language to address some of the concerns raised by organizations such as BOMA-Atlanta. The full House planned to vote on HR 1 on Friday the 29th, but adjourned before doing so. Because HR 1 is a constitutional amendment, passage requires a 2/3 majority vote of the legislature. Local governments have lobbied hard against the measure, and as of Friday it did not appear that there were enough votes for passage. It will likely be further amended at the Rules Committee level and brought before the full House in the coming days. Each week the state legislature meets at the Georgia Capitol, BOMA-Atlanta's lobbysts at FiveashStanley provide an update of key issues and legislation. Stay informed by reading this update each week on the advocacy section of the BOMA-Atlanta Web site. To read last week's update, click here.
Online HVAC Article. Read about the Commercial HVAC program online on Chattahoochee Technical College's Web site. The HVAC program represents a unique partnership between BOMA-Atlanta and Chattahoochee Tech. The BOMA Technical Organization (BTO) worked hand-in-hand with Chattahoochee Technical College in late 2006 to provide the special Commercial HVAC course for commercial building engineers. The course provides an opportunity for engineers to enhance their service skills through hands-on training, enabling them to become more proficient in their work environments. The third semester course will be offered Thursdays in April. Click here for more information about or to register for the April HVAC course.
