Attend the SEEA Seminar. The Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance (SEEA) is offering an Energy Saving Performance Contract seminar on Jan. 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in room 1101 at 270 Washington St. in Atlanta. The panel discussion will cover the current status of energy-performance contracting in Georgia, including case studies of energy savings and key items to assess in the contracting process. The panel will include Jim Williams of Siemens; Dick Harvey of Honeywell; Mike Sabo of Energy Ace; and David Godfrey of the GEFA. To register, e-mail Ben at the SEEA at ben@seealliance.org.

Stay Informed about Government Affairs. Each week that the state legislature meets at the Georgia Capitol, BOMA-Atlanta's lobbysts at FiveashStanley provide an update of key issues and legislation. Become a Regional TOBY Judge . The BOMA Southern Region is looking for BOMA-Atlanta members interested in judging The Office Building of the Year (TOBY) awards at the regional level. You must have local judging experience to be eligible. Judging will take place March 21 though March 27. Please contact Steve Harrison, sharrison@parmco.com if you are interested, and please let him know if you are interested in TOBY judging at the international level as well.

Sign up for a 2009 Committee or SIG. Becoming involved in a committee is one of the best ways to enhance your BOMA experience. Committee participation provides countless networking and leadership development opportunities. You also have the opportunity to sign up for two new special interest groups in 2009. Fundamentals of Real Property Administration. (January 28) To fulfill the role of property manager in today's marketplace, you must be knowledgeable in many areas. You are expected to manage buildings; communicate with employees, managers, and tenants; protect the interests of the owner; market property; negotiate leases; and protect the environment. By providing an overview of the property management profession, this course helps you understand, and integrate, the many duties and responsibilities of a property manager.

Refrigeration Systems and Accessories. (February 25) Maintaining the proper comfort level in an office environment is essential for tenant satisfaction. Refrigeration equipment is a key component of an air-conditioning system that must be properly maintained and operated at maximum efficiency. This course reviews the basic refrigeration cycle and refrigeration system components, as well as how to operate and maintain reciprocating and absorption refrigeration systems. You will gain the skills and knowledge to describe the principles of refrigeration and identify the performance characteristics of refrigeration components. You will also learn how to establish maintenance processes and troubleshooting techniques. Major topics covered in this course include refrigeration cycles and principles, mechanical components of refrigeration systems and systematic troubleshooting.

Design, Operation and Maintenance, Part I. (March 4) This course provides information property and facility managers need to manage the ongoing operation and maintenance of building systems and to maximize building efficiency and cost-effectiveness. It also provides information on building design and construction, project delivery, construction materials and HVAC systems. Other areas covered in the course include roofing systems, ceilings and floorings, interior walls and plumbing systems.

2009 BOMA-Atlanta Leadership Academy. (March 16) The BOMA-Atlanta Leadership Academy is a certificate program designed for all property and facility managers, and for building engineers who have management responsibilities. BOMA-Atlanta membership is required to participate in the Academy. The five-part series of full-day courses will taught by University of Georgia MBA professors. On March 16, the topic will be leadership development/developing self-awareness. On April 3, the topic will be time and stress management. On April 16 and May 8, the topic will be negotiation skills. On
May 12, the topic will be creating a motivating work environment. To apply for the academy, download and complete a PDF application or a Word application and fax it to 404-475-9987. Applications are due Feb. 25, 2009.

Building Engineering 101TM. (March 18) Created specifically for building engineers and property and facility managers who want to gain a better understanding of engineering, the BOMA-Atlanta Building Engineering 101TM program is a six-day course taught over six weeks. The program combines classroom-style learning, interaction with industry professionals and behind-the-scenes tours of metro-Atlanta buildings. Classes will be held in different Atlanta buildings. Learn from real-life scenarios and gain an understanding of relevant building systems in a course specifically designed to teach beginning building engineers how to be successful in their field. A continental breakfast will be served on each class date. Lunch will be served on April 22. Those who complete all six classes will earn a BOMA-Atlanta Building Engineering 101TM certificate. The Georgia Real Estate Commission has approved this course for 18 CEU hrs.

Energy Efficient Buildings Seminar. (March 19) Presented by Realcomm, the Energy  Efficient Buildings: Green Technology that Works seminar brings together industry experts to discuss the latest technologies for reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions in buildings. With the fluctuating price of oil and increasing utility costs, building owners and operators need to incorporate intelligent building initiatives such as automated building systems, daylight harvesting, wireless sensors and controls, renewable sources of energy and energy management software in order to remain competitive and profitable. Speakers will present new, innovative solutions and case studies for green sustainable buildings as well as methods for establishing ROI on the new solutions. This seminar is a must-attend for owners, developers, property managers, facility managers, engineers and system integrators. A continental breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m., followed by the seminar from 8 a.m. until noon. This seminar has been approved for four hours of CEUs from the Georgia Real Estate Commission.

UPCOMING EVENTS

TOBY and Association Awards Banquet. (February 11) Register now for the TOBY and Association Awards Banquet presented by AlliedBarton Security Services at the beautiful Georgia Aquarium. See your colleagues recognized for their accomplishments and learn what it takes to manage an award-winning building. Please note that this banquet is not a regular luncheon. Registration and payment are required. The aquarium's ballroom allows for 10 seats per table. If you purchase 10 seats to the banquet, please indicate if you would like all the seats to be at the same table. Portions of tables purchased along with full tables will be placed as near to the full tables from the same company as possible.

BOMA Day at the Capitol. (February 17) The 2009 BOMA-Atlanta Government Affairs Committee is hosting the annual BOMA Day at the Capitol from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on February 17 at the state Capitol. During the event, BOMA members interact informally with elected officials, capitol staffers and others involved in state politics. No registration is required.

Feb. BOMA Bash. (February 19) The Feb. BOMA Bash is sponsored by Full Circle Restoration and Construction Services Inc. and Leapley Construction. The BOMA Bash is an informal social and networking opportunity for property managers, facility managers and building engineers, hosted by a select group of allied member sponsors. There is no charge to attend the event, although advance registration is required. Attendance is limited to the first 80 individuals who register. March BTO Luncheon. BOMA Technical Organization (BTO) quarterly luncheons bring together building engineers and others interested in the technical aspects of properly maintaining commercial properties. Each luncheon includes educational coverage of a topic important to the industry. To maximize attendance, each luncheon is held twice at different locations. March BOMA Luncheon. BOMA luncheons are enjoyable and educational. They are also a valuable networking and professional development experience. The March luncheon is sponsored by Full Circle Restoration and Construction Services Inc. and will be held in the Grand Ballroom West on the second floor of the Atlanta Hilton. New member orientation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Walton Meeting room on the second floor of the Atlanta Hilton. Members may attend the luncheon at no charge by registering on or before the Friday before the luncheon. Membership is determined by an individual name, not company affiliation. Members who do not register by the cut-off date must pay a $25.00 late fee to attend the event.
