BOMA and IFMA Announce Common Floor Measurement Definitions. BOMA International and the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) have published A Unified Approach to Measuring Office Space, a report outlining common definitions for floor area measurements, as well as major revisions to IFMA and BOMA’s respective area measurement standards. These common definitions will be incorporated into the standards supported by each organization with the primary goal to clarify building measurement and industry comparisons based on floor area measurements. Free Sustainable Toolkit. The Partnership for a Sustainable Georgia provides free assistance to help Georgia businesses and organizations reduce their impact on the environment. One of their newest tools is the Sustainable Office Toolkit, which helps building owners and managers identify their impact on the environment and find ways to reduce negative impacts, often leading to decreased costs. The statewide phone service is available 24/7 and provides statewide traffic conditions, route-specific information and details on road or lane closures due to construction, incidents or weather. To access the system, dial 5-1-1 from any landline or mobile phone. Estimated travel times are available for major roads within the metro-Atlanta area. BOMA-Atlanta Reaching out to Medical Office Community. Growing numbers of facility managers are emerging in the expanding medical office building community. To keep pace with change, BOMA-Atlanta launched the May 9 Medical Office Building Seminar. At the successful seminar, a panel of experts discussed best parking practices. An article by BOMA-Atlanta will also appear in June issue of Atlanta Hospital News, which is distributed to more than 30,000 healthcare professionals per month. Watch for the article in AHS and share it with colleagues in the medical community.
Get Involved in Community Service. On April 25, the BOMA-Atlanta Community Service Committee hosted the second annual fundraising luncheon for Hillside at Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar. At the event, $15,535 was raised for Hillside, Atlanta's oldest organized charity. The next community service event is the BOMA-Atlanta/Hillside Mountain outing on May 17. This annual event involves meeting the Hillside children and staff at a ranch in the north Georgia mountains outside of Ellijay. Volunteers can schedule full-day, morning or afternoon involvement to help set-up, monitor, administer or breakdown events. Learn how to use timelines to manage tenant problems and maintain consistency. Plus, discover how to communicate effectively with tenants to resolve disputes and be prepared for litigation. Ethics Is Good Business ShortCourse. (June 4) This course helps you understand the effect that ethical behavior can have on your professional performance and your property's bottom line. Through presentations of real-life scenarios and case studies, you will identify and resolve ethical dilemmas that can occur on the job.
Law and Risk Management. (June 11) In today's complex business environment, it is becoming increasingly important for property managers to know how to address legal and risk management issues. This course will provide you with a foundation in the basic principles of law and risk management. In addition to covering leasing, the course covers important issues concerning torts, contracts, employer/employee relations, property rights and environmental law. The course describes the risk management process, covering assessment of loss exposures and handling daily risks that property managers encounter. You will learn about the insurance market, different types of insurance policies and the claims adjustment process. The course also covers equipment breakdown insurance, which is an area of growing concern for real estate managers.
BOMA Energy Efficiency Program: Valuing Energy Enhancement Projects and Financial Returns Webinar. (July 10) In this critical Webinar, you will examine the use of financial metrics and tools to calculate and sell enhancement projects to owners, asset managers and tenants by highlighting the positive financial and environmental impacts of improved energy performance. Learn how to put energy efficiency in the context of what's important to financial decision-makers. Upon successfully completing this seminar, you'll be able to: build compelling arguments to sell the financial benefits to senior decision-makers; calculate the financial benefits of improvements such as NPV, IRR, ROI, payback, NOI and asset value; calculate the environmental benefits of improvements; and describe how energy performance improvements benefit tenants, improve comfort and extend equipment life cycles. Budgeting and Accounting. (July 16) In this course, you will have the opportunity to apply concepts within the real property and facilities context. You will follow the accounting process and creation of a budget from start to finish, learning such valuable skills as how to interpret financial statements, annual reports and statements of cash flows. And you will learn practical skills such as how to compile lease abstracts and prepare rent rolls. The course also includes exercises pertaining to computing productivity ratios, depreciation, ending cash balances, preparing income and expense budgets, and explaining budget variances.

BTO Trade Show Breakfast. (May 21) The BOMA Technical Organization (BTO) is hosting a breakfast for building engineers in conjunction with the BOMA Trade Show on May 21. The breakfast is sponsored by Superior Commercial Roofing and Parker Young Construction & Fire Star and will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the Cobb Galleria's room 106, with the trade show following from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The breakfast topic is water conservation issues for building engineers. Registration is limited to building engineers and you must be registered to attend. The breakfast is free for BTO members and $30 for non-members. There is a $10 late registration fee for members and non-members who register after May 9.
May BOMA Luncheon. (May 21) BOMA luncheons are enjoyable and educational. They are also a valuable networking and professional development experience. The May BOMA luncheon will be held in conjunction with the BOMA Trade Show at the Cobb Galleria. Registration is required for the luncheon. Trade show exhibitors must register to attend the luncheon. The luncheon will be sponsored by Mallory & Evans and held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Cobb Galleria's Hall B. Featured speaker Senator John Wiles will discuss legislative perspectives on the state of the commercial real estate industry in Atlanta. Please note that the BOMA Trade Show will be closed during the luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Members may attend a BOMA luncheon at no charge by registering on or before the Friday before the luncheon. Membership is determined by an individual name, not company affiliation. Members who do not register by the cut-off date must pay a $25 late fee to attend the event.
2008 BOMA-Atlanta Trade Show. (May 21) Elect your winning team at the 2008 BOMA-Atlanta Trade Show. The sold-out show will be held May 21 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Cobb Galleria's Hall A, in conjunction with the 8 a.m. BTO Trade Show breakfast in room 106 and the 11:30 a.m. May BOMA luncheon in Hall B. All property managers, facility managers and building engineers may attend the trade show for free and enter to win exciting prizes such as the grand prize trip to Washington, D.C.! During the trade show there will be a silent auction to benefit Hillside. Allied members who are not exhibiting at the show may not attend the trade show, but may attend the May 21 luncheon. Please note that the show will close briefly for the BOMA luncheon.
June BOMA Bash. Sponsored by EPIC Response, Mid America Metals, TrilogyFM and Coast & Valley, the June BOMA Bash will be held at Pappasito's and is an informal social and networking opportunity for property managers, facility managers and building engineers, hosted by a select group of allied member sponsors. There is no charge to attend the event, although advance registration is required. Attendance is limited to the first 80 individuals who register.
BTO Luncheon. (June 5 and 12) BTO quarterly luncheons bring together building engineers and others interested in the technical aspects of properly maintaining commercial properties.
